As the weather begins to warm, Mt. Eden welcomes their spring sports season featuring Mt. Eden’s swim team.
“Our goal is to continue to grow, get fast, and have fun,” said Mt. Eden swim coach Tyler Tomei.
In order to make this happen, he hopes for swim members to show up consistently to practice and demonstrate responsibility.
“The big thing is learning how to push themselves a little bit more than they might realize,” said Tomei.
The coach reported one of the real issues for the swim team is the fact that there are no pools on any of the three highschool campuses across the Hayward Unified School District. Consequently, practice for swimming requires additional management as the team has to go to Chabot College for practice and meets.
“I wouldn’t say it’s too bad because Chabot is close and we have time after school,” said Mt. Eden senior and swim captain Ella Faanunu.
Despite needing to go to Chabot for meets and practices, Tomei and Faanunu both believe that the team can manage the distance and improve the team by teaching them to be accountable and dedicated.
“We’ve definitely grown. We have a lot more swimmers this year, which I’m very excited about,” said Faanunu, looking forward to the season.
“Come out and learn a lifelong skill,” said Tomei, encouraging students to join the swim team, whether they know how to swim or not. “Challenge yourself and become better prepared to take on future challenges. Most importantly, come out and have fun.”
